PORTRAIT ILLUSTRATION

OBJECTIVE: Students will create an illustration that represents themselves, a friend, or a family member. Your portrait should visually tell your viewer a few things about this person. This does not necessarily mean that you need to draw/paint their portrait. How else can you create a “portrait” of someone without showing their face?

THOUGHTS TO GET YOU STARTED:
  1. What are three words you would use to define this person?  How can you show this in your art?
    1. _________________
    2. _________________
    3. _________________
  2. Why is this person so important to you?  How can you show this in your art?
  3. How would you describe the mood of this person? How might you show this in your art? Colors? Line (jagged, smooth)?
  4. How would you describe your relationship with this person? Loving, dependent, fragile, imperfect, perfect? How can you show this in your art?
  5. What are some defining moments in this person’s life? A war, a marriage, the birth of a child, death of a loved one, graduation?  How can you show this in your art?
  6. Does your person have any special skills, abilities, or interests? Do they love working on cars? Love gardening? Love traveling? How can you show this in your art?
  7. How does this person show love to you? Do they spend time with you? Cook for you? Listen to you? Give you gifts? How can you show this in your art?

TIPS: Choose an compositional element to guide your art making, such as leading lines, diagonals, rule of thirds, symmetry, etc. Also, choose a principle of design/art to focus your work, such as emphasis, pattern, movement, space/scale, etc.

ARTIST EXAMPLES:
(Think about:
What compositional elements and principles of design/art does the artist use well? How would this work of art be different if _______ (scale, focal point, symmetry, colors, etc.) were changed? What mood do you think the artist is trying to convey? How can you tell?
