LEVEL 2:
HISTORICAL/CURRENT EVENT or ISSUE POSTER

OBJECTIVE: Students will create an illustration that depicts an important historical or current event. Students can also take a position on a contemporary issue and create a poster about that issue.

THOUGHTS TO GET YOU STARTED:
  1. What is a historical or contemporary event or issue that interests you? Why?
  2. What are the most important facts about this event/issue? How can you visually tell the viewer about them?
  3. Is there a specific person or group of people associated with this event/issue? If so, how can you best depict them?
  4. What colors (dark, pastel, bright, bold, etc.) would be appropriate for this event/issue and why? What kind of mark-making/lines (smooth, jagged, bold, soft, etc.) would be appropriate for this event/issue and why?
  5. Is there a specific style of art (realism, cartoon, art deco, graphic, etc.)  that would complement this event/issue best? Why?
  6. Is there a specific media (paint, digital, drawing, markers, printmaking, etc.) that would complement this event/issue best? Why?

TIPS: Choose an compositional element to guide your art making, such as leading lines, diagonals, rule of thirds, symmetry, etc. Also, choose a principle of design/art to focus your work, such as emphasis, pattern, movement, space/scale, etc.

EXAMPLE ISSUES or EVENTS:
War (WWI/II/Vietnam, etc.), famous assassinations, famous disasters (Titanic, Chernobyl, etc.), moon landing, MLK's famous speech, global warming/climate change, pollution, equal rights, mental health awareness, technology addiction, etc. Can be a positive or negative event or issue.

Once you have your issue chosen, look up facts and information about the issue. Next, look up images, art, and posters associated with that event. What do you notice? How might you create your own visual representation of this issue/event?

RUBRIC:
You will be graded using the 2D Art Rubric.
