PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
For this project, you will create either a vase or a lantern.

REQUIREMENTS:
Prep (15 points):
- Research: Spend some time looking up designs that interest you. Google “ceramic vase” (or lantern), “ceramic texture,” “ceramic designs,” etc. Print out photos of several lanterns/vases, textures, designs, ideas, etc. that you like. Have these images near you at all times during the project. - 5 points
- Sketches: Do two different sketch ideas. About 5-10 minutes each. - 5 points
- Mini Version: Create a mini version of your final. Work out any problems you foresee struggling with now. Experiment. - 5 points
Form (35 points):
- Body: You can use any of the ways we’ve learned to create vessels to create your project (pinch pot, coil, slab). - Not graded
- Size: The vessel must be at least 6 inches tall (or wide if it is a horizontal structure) - 5 points
- Resources: Have both photos and your drawings near you at all times. Also, always use tracers to cut your slabs - 5 points
- Craftsmanship: The vessel must be completely smooth where applicable. No unintended lumps or bumps. The vessel is neat and clean. Textures are cleaned out - 15 points
- Originality: The vessel is interesting, original, and creative. - 10 points
Surface (25 points):
- Texture: Vase or lantern must be covered with additive and/or subtractive textures (at least 70% of vessel must be covered). Textures should be interesting and original. - 15 points
- Subject: The way you decorate (add texture and sculptural details) your vessel must adhere to one or more of the following: (Not graded)

- 5 extra points to anyone who creates a coil vessel or one with multiple sides.
ADVICE FROM STUDENTS
- Draw out all your things first and make sure you like everything. Also, the clay will shrink in the kiln so make sure you make things bigger than you need them.
- Be creative and don't worry about messing it up. It's easy to fix.
- Don't get frustrated with how your project looks in its early stages. The end product looks totally different.
